Description:

Writing center tutors are part of a dynamic, cross-curricular learning community. Writing center tutors work with their peers on writing assignments from across the curriculum. At the writing center, we welcome diverse and enthusiastic students who are willing to learn and to mentor their peers as they work through the writing process. Writing Center tutors duties include the following:

  • Work as a peer tutor for SUU students who bring writing assignments to the writing center
  • Work at the receptionist desk as needed
  • Assist students to schedule appointments for writing center sessions
  • Complete other writing center activities and projects as needed
  • Attend training meetings and complete projects as needed for the writing center. Registration in English 3890, Writing - - Tutor Practicum for 1-3 credit hours is required as part of training.

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing and grammar skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to mentor a variety of writing styles from various disciplines
  • Completion of English 1010 and English 2010, preferably with a grade of A or A-
  • 3.0 overall GPA required (3.5 GPA in area of specialty in writing. For example, 3.5 GPA in English courses required for English majors/minors)

In addition, applicants must submit the following documents with their application:

  • A resume including: Major, Class Status (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate), and Overall GPA
  • A cover letter stating why you wish to work as a writing tutor
  • An unofficial transcript with your English 1010 and 2010 grades highlighted
  • A writing sample, preferably an academic paper that shows proficiency in accurately writing to a specific style guide, such as APA or MLA
  • Request THREE emails of recommendation from SUU professors. At least one professor should be an English professor. If you are transferring from another university, you may ask professors from your previous university to write the email recommendations. Recommendations should be sent directly to Julia Combs at juliacombs@suu.edu. Applications are considered incomplete until recommendations are received.
